Introduction

Mahashivratri Pooja is one of the most significant Hindu festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is a spiritual night of fasting, vigil, and powerful rituals, marking the cosmic dance and divine marriage of Shiva and Parvati.

Ritual Steps

  1. Begin the day with an early morning ritual bath and clean clothes.
  2. Set a Sankalp (resolve) to observe fast and offer prayers through the night.
  3. Prepare the puja space or visit a Shiva temple; place the Shivling on the altar.
  4. Perform Abhishekam of the Shivling with Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar) and Gangajal.
  5. Offer Bilva leaves, fresh flowers, fruits, betel leaves, sandalwood, and vermilion to the Shivling.
  6. Light diyas (lamps), incense sticks, and perform aarti with chanting of 'Om Namah Shivaya' and Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.
  7. Divide the night into four Prahars (quarters); perform separate abhishekam in each: milk (1st), curd (2nd), ghee (3rd), honey (4th).
  8. Keep a night-long vigil with meditation, singing bhajans, and silent prayers.
  9. Break the fast at dawn after offering final prayers and distributing prasad.
