Rituals

  • Married women observe a day-long fast for the long life and well-being of their husbands; unmarried women fast for a good spouse.

  • Swinging on decorated swings (jhulans) hung from trees and singing folk Teej songs is a joyful part of celebrations.
  • Visit to temples, perform Parvati-Shiva puja, offer flowers, sweets and prayers at home or in community gatherings.
  • Prepare special festive foods and share sweets and seasonal delicacies with friends and family.

Regional Highlights

  • Hariyali Teej is especially popular in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana with region-specific songs and customs.
  • In Rajasthan the festival includes elaborate swings and Teej processions; in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar families celebrate with community gatherings and special foods.
  • In urban areas, cultural organizations and temples organise public Teej events bringing together women from diverse backgrounds.

History

Teej festivals have ancient roots in Hindu tradition celebrating seasonal cycles and divine unions. Hariyali Teej specifically is linked to legends of Parvati’s penance and reunion with Shiva, symbolizing devotion, marriage blessings and the prosperity of the land during monsoon.

Additional Information

  • Hariyali Teej celebrates the rejuvenation brought by monsoon rains — the name ‘Hariyali’ refers to greenery and fresh growth.
  • It is one of three major Teej festivals (Hartalika Teej, Kajari/Kamariya Teej and Hariyali Teej) observed across North India with slightly different legends and practices.
  • If you publish local pages, consider adding regional songs (Teej bhajans), mehndi designs and swing-decoration tips to increase engagement.
