Introduction

Gangaur is one of Rajasthan’s most prominent festivals dedicated to Goddess Parvati, symbolizing love, marital fidelity, and spring’s arrival. The word 'Gan' denotes Lord Shiva and 'Gaur' refers to Parvati. Women across Rajasthan and nearby states worship Isar-Gauri idols made of clay, praying for marital bliss and prosperity.

History

Mythologically, Gangaur celebrates the devotion of Goddess Parvati, who meditated intensely to win Lord Shiva as her husband. After marriage, Gauri visits her parental home during Gangaur to bless her friends with conjugal happiness before returning with Lord Shiva. Hence, the festival symbolizes marital affection and divine love.
