Introduction

Ananta Chaturdashi is a sacred Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his eternal Ananta form. It occurs on the Chaturdashi (14th day) of Shukla Paksha in the Bhadrapada month. The festival represents infinite faith, continuity, and divine balance. Devotees tie the sacred ‘Anant Sutra’ for protection and endless blessings.

Other Names

Anant Chaturdashi, Anant Chaudas, Ananta Padmanabha Vrat

Pooja Vidhi

  • Begin the day early with a holy bath and fasting.
  • Install an idol or image of Lord Vishnu in Ananta Shayana form on a decorated altar.
  • Offer turmeric, flowers, milk, grains, betel nuts, and the sacred Anant Dharam thread.
  • Tie the sanctified thread on your wrist while chanting ‘Om Anantaya Namah’.
  • Perform aarti, distribute food, and feed the poor to conclude the ritual.

Rituals

  • Devotees clean their home and set up an altar with Lord Vishnu’s image reclining on the serpent Shesha.
  • An ‘Anant Sutra’ (fourteen-knot thread) is sanctified and tied on the right wrist (men) or left wrist (women).
  • Offer 14 fruits, 14 flowers, and 14 types of grains symbolizing purity and completeness.
  • Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama and Ananta Padmanabha Katha with devotion.
  • Distribute sweets, especially Chana Dal and rice pudding, as prasadam among friends and family.

Regional Highlights

  • In Maharashtra, the day coincides with Ganesh Visarjan, marked by grand processions and prayers.
  • In South India, the festival is observed as Ananta Padmanabha Vrat dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
  • In Jainism, this day is associated with Lord Vasupujya attaining Nirvana, concluding the Paryushan Parva.
  • Rituals involving 14 offerings (grains, fruits, and flowers) are common in North and South India.

History

As per the Mahabharata, Lord Krishna instructed Yudhishthira to perform the Ananta Vrata for fourteen years to regain his lost kingdom and peace. The 14 knots on the thread symbolize the 14 worlds created by Lord Vishnu — Bhu, Bhuva, Swarga, and others. The fast and worship invoke infinite cosmic power and devotion to the preserver of the universe. On the same day, Lord Ganesha immersion (Visarjan) also takes place, combining Vishnu and Ganapati worship.

Additional Information

  • The number 14 symbolizes completeness and the 14 worlds under Vishnu’s protection.
  • Observing this vrat for 14 consecutive years is believed to free one from grief and misfortune.
  • It promotes eternal harmony and connection between divinity, nature, and mankind.
